What-Is-Waterproofing

What Is Waterproofing?

Waterproofing is an important part of the process for your walls and floor. Neglecting this aspect can result in long-term issues that may have been preventable. The significant challenge with water damage lies in its gradual occurrence, often unnoticed until it escalates into substantial problems that come with a hefty price tag. Without adequate waterproofing for your home, you are likely to face expensive issues over time.

What is waterproofing and why is it so important?

Waterproofing involves the application of a protective barrier on a surface to control the flow of water, keeping it where it’s wanted and preventing it from entering unwanted dry areas. This process is important for moisture prevention, especially in areas with high water exposure, such as bathrooms. The primary material used for this purpose is a waterproofing membrane, akin to a thick paint that establishes a water-resistant barrier. Without proper waterproofing, leaked water can initially cause minor damage to the paint, eventually escalating to more severe problems like structural damage and mould growth. Investing in waterproofing proves to be highly important, ultimately saving you money in the long term.

What is the waterproofing process?

While everyone has their own way of doing things, they will usually follow a similar process. Initially, the floor needs thorough cleaning to ensure the surface is free of dirt and dust before the application begins. Subsequently, a primer is applied to the surface, starting from the back, and working outward until the entire area is covered. Once the primer has dried, silicone is used to fill internal gaps. Following this, apply the waterproofing membrane by a roller or brush, the waterproofing agent is applied to corners and walls, with the remaining product added to any floor cracks or use bandage if cracks are large. After drying, apply a second  coat with the remaining waterproof membrane, normally applied up to  24 hours later depending on weather conditions. The surface is then left to dry and cure before tiling can take place.

How do you know if your waterproofing systems don’t meet the standards?

Signs of inadequate or absent waterproofing become evident when you observe water damage in the area, tile displacement, the presence of mildew and mould, or water seepage around the shower, walls, and floor. Additionally, an unpleasant odour may arise from the dampness, indicating potential issues with the application of waterproofing.

Can you DIY your waterproofing?

While it’s always recommended that you get a professional to help you, especially if you have no DIY experience. When it comes to complying with the Australian Standards, it might be better to use a company you trust. However, if you do decide to do it yourself, make sure you do your research so that you not only get all the steps right but also use the right products.

When it comes to waterproofing, you want to make sure you get it right the first time. A quality waterproofing job will ensure that your home is free from any water damage both now and in the future.
