Light VS. Dark Tiles
The colour of tiles you choose for your room can completely change the look of the area, so it’s important you get it right. It’s not about following trends. It’s about what works best in terms of the space, the purpose of the room, and your personal preference.
Keeping things clean
Dark tiles are going to hide dirt a lot more than light tiles, but that’s not always a good thing. Seeing the dirt on the floor will force you to clean more regularly, whereas dark tiles might get you cleaning less frequently. If you’ve already got a great cleaning routine and you want to add some dark tiles to a room, then go for it!
Consider the size
Dark tiles will make a room look smaller, so if you’ve already got a small room you might want to consider going for light tiles to give the illusion of space. However, there are ways to work around space, regardless of what tiles you choose. If your space isn’t large but you want dark tiles, then consider adding mirrors and lighting to the room and keeping it uncluttered to still allow the room to breathe.
Decide on the visual impact you want
What mood do you want in the room? Dark rooms create a more dramatic look and make more of a statement. They generally have more of a wow factor, especially when paired with good lighting and some creative accessories. However, light tiles work well in a room where you want people to feel relaxed and calm. Light tiles are also a great option when you want something else in the room to take centre stage.
Don’t forget to match
If you’re only redoing your floor, make sure that whatever you choose goes well with the rest of the things in the room. If you’re set on changing your tiles and they don’t match the cabinets, you might have to consider changing the cabinets, too.
The temperature
Dark tiles will retain the heat and make the room feel warmer, which is great if this is the temperature you are looking for. If, however, you’d prefer a cooler temperature in the room, then light tiles will help keep things cool. Before choosing your colour, look at the insulation in the room, the way you want the room to feel, and how much natural sunlight it will be getting.
How often do you redecorate
If you’re someone who redecorates often and who likes to change things up every few months, then going with a light tile will make this a lot easier. Dark tiles, while beautiful, don’t give you as much opportunity for change.
Both light and dark tiles are great options, but they need to work well within the space. Remember, however, that even once you’ve decided on light or dark, you can still play with the shade and texture to make it your own.
