Ways to Remove Black Moulds From Your Bathroom
Black Mould is not only an unsightly occurrence in your bathroom, it is also a health issue. Moisture is really the key cause of mould growth, so if you are losing the battle against black mould, then you may need to look at new ventilation and sealing of wet areas to ensure that once the mould is gone, its gone for good!
However, in the meantime, we have compiled a list of ways that you can safely and effectively remove any existing mould from your bathroom.
Removal From Glass and Tile
To remove black mould from glass areas use detergent. This is an effective method to remove low to medium levels of mould quickly and efficiently without the need for harsh chemicals.
- Mix 1-cup detergent (such as laundry detergent) and 2 litres of water.
- Use a scrub brush to apply the solution to the mouldy area and scrub the mould away.
- Rinse the area when you’re finished.
If your bathroom is literally covered in mould then you may need something that packs a little more punch! We suggest trying some clear ammonia, which you can pick up at any local supermarket or hardware store. Remember to only use this option sparingly as it is a toxic product and appropriate safety precautions should be followed – details of which can be located on the back of the purchased product.
- Make a solution of 2 cups water and 2 cups clear ammonia and place it in a spray bottle.
- Spray it over the mouldy area.
- Let it sit for at least 2 hours.
- Wipe and rinse the area clean.
This method should only be employed on non-porous surfaces such as glass and tile and is not appropriate for use on wood or other porous surfaces.
Non-Toxic Removal (other areas of the bathroom)
I. Hydrogen peroxide
This is effective on all types of surfaces, and it’s completely non-toxic! Simply, pick up a couple of bottles of 3% hydrogen peroxide from the supermarket.
- Fill a spray bottle with 3% hydrogen peroxide.
- Spray the mouldy area.
- Let it sit for 20 minutes.
- Wipe the surface clean.
II. Tea Tree Oil
You can use this spray on all surfaces of your bathroom including wooden floors. It’s completely non-toxic and natural. But the best part is that it kills black mould very effectively – as it’s a natural fungicide!
- Mix 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil and 2 cups of water.
- Pour the solution into a spray bottle.
- Saturate the mouldy area.
- Don’t bother wiping the area as tea tree oil there will prevent future spores from growing.
