At Tile Wizards, whenever we get asked whether we’d recommend homeowners to take on bathroom DIY projects, we say it depends on how much time and experience you have.
If you are looking to re-tile a bathroom, we say, unless you’ve done it successfully before, are tight on budget, and have a great amount of time and patience, contact a professional. But if you are an avid DIYer, or are a crafty perfectionist who wants to take on a bathroom renovation, here are some great tiling tips you don’t want to forget.
Do your research
While hiring a professional might cost a lot of money you’d rather save, you know you’ll end up with a beautiful bathroom as a result. When DIYing, you will definitely save money, but the only way to not jeopardise the results is by doing a lot of research and make sure you are prepared and know exactly what to do to successfully complete the task ahead.
So, don’t just read one article, read plenty, write your own plan, and even list everything that could go wrong, and how you’d solve it.
Figure out how many tiles you’ll need
Take the time to measure the room, calculate how many tiles you’ll need, and add a 10% allowance for any mistakes and repairs down the road. We also recommend you make sure you’re buying boxes of the same batched tile, It is always recommended to mix boxes up when installing to create an even shading of tiles throughout the project.
Talk to a specialist and make sure you buy the right products.
Tiling a wet area is tricky. You will need to waterproof it all before you can even start thinking about tiles. Then you need to choose the right tiles for you, the right shape, material, and finish. And depending on the materials and your design preferences, you will need different adhesive, spacers, and grout. Make sure you go to a specialist store, like Tile Wizards, and explain what your project entails. The team at the store will be able to help you, and will even give you some extra tips to get your bathroom looking its best.
Make sure you buy or hire all necessary tools to make your project easier
From a laser level to a tile cutter, don’t try to improvise with tools. This is not where you should try to save money, especially if you’ve never attempted tiling before. Tile Wizards does hire professional tile cutters.
Measure twice, cut once
If the reason why you’re even DIYing in the first place was to save money, then make sure you’re not wasting material by not double-checking measurements before cutting tiles. Tiling is not a job for the impatient, so this is definitely not the time to rush the process. Slow down, measure twice, cut once, and get it done perfectly.
